7/27/2010 - Making A Plan

This project is in the planning phase. We are working on site-specific plans and are creating renderings of the proposed garden site as well as lists of needed donations of services and materials to aid with fundraising and support efforts.

Madison Street Creole Garden

Community parks and gardens are one of the best ways for residents to reclaim a decaying urban neighborhood.

Colorful-vegetables-755879This shared experience of building something together creates a powerful unified voice for their common goals and concerns. Each neighbor's investment strengthens not just the roots in the garden, but the roots of community.

In partnership with local farmers, residents, volunteers, businesses and other organizations, TownFolk is working to acquire a lot in an area with a number of interested residents to develop it's first community-supported garden/park. Our current programming goal is to produce organic food for sharing with residents, and for sale at local farmer's markets.

Project Goals:

Provide a fresh, local and organic food source to the community

Educate residents about gardening and eating local foods

Create new hands-on educational programs and opportunities for local children

Inspire residents to create home gardens, share recipes and get involved

Transform an unused property into a center for community activity

Garden Features:

Sustainable space featuring compost areas, rain barrels and solar-powered lighting

Fruit trees and other permanent landscape features paired with seasonal agriculture and perennial herbs create a landscape that is both beautiful year-round and productive in addressing the food needs in the community.

12'x12' (min) covered multi-purpose pavilion with built-in curbside produce stand for gatherings, group meetings and community education programs for children. Stand could sell produce to residents on Saturday mornings, and double as a lemonade or other stand for children to participate.

Small greenhouse for starting seedlings and growing modest crops of off-season vegetables.

Long-term, we would like the garden to include a chicken coop for fresh eggs and an aviary with ornamental birds, providing interesting sights and sounds to the garden, and bringing in local experts to educate children about animals.
